Executive Summary

Developing an app is just the beginning. The next step of the journey is to get people to download and engage with it. We chose to develop a fan app ‘Rave about Billie Eilish’ because she’s a phenomenon and has a massive fan base. We think that we can reach out to her fan base and adapt the app to meet their needs and get downloads. It’s a cycle of develop and release.

In this article we’re going to share our reaction to events as they happen on our quest to make the app a success. You’ll see the hoops we have to jump through and the decisions we make based on issues we have to overcome. This is a ‘warts and all’ article that shows the realities of our mission to succeed.

So what does success look like to us? The graph above shows the size of the market and the level of activity that there is. So success to us has to be hundreds of thousands of downloads each month with a massive base of happy active users. Another large factor for success is that we must do this ourselves with almost no budget. Join us on the journey - book mark the article here.

Problem

Our ‘Rave About Billie Eilish’ has been submitted to various app stores. When accepted our listing needs to appear top or as close to the top in any ‘Billie Eilish’ search to give us the best chance of being found and downloaded.

Research conducted by Forrester indicates that 63% of apps are discovered through app store searches. So our listing needs to rank well for our Billie Eilish app to be found and once found our listing words and images need to convince fans to download it.

With thousands of new apps released daily to stores such as Google Play, App Store, Amazon, Sony etc they are already packed to the gunnels with millions of apps with thousands more being added daily. Being heard above the noise isn’t going to be easy.

Solution

The solution is App Store Optimisation or ASO which works along exactly the same lines as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) with the exception that one searches a store and the other the web. 70% of mobile users are searching for specific apps in the various app stores.

We’ve submitted the app and it’s been accepted into the Google Play Store here: Rave about Billie Eilish. At this moment it’s not been accepted in the App Store for reasons at the point of writing we don’t know. However - we do have a call coming up with a guy from Apple which should help us to move this forward.

At this point the app doesn’t rank in Google Play - so we need to wait until it does. Hopefully that will happen soon as need downloads to analyse fan activity using Google Analytics.

The app uses the Firebase SDK which provides us with Crashlytics, Performance Monitoring, Test Lab and Analytics. Without going in to any detail about this, it means that we can use these Firebase tools to improve the app as we identify issues that we can correct and behaviours that we can improve.

ASO operates on the content of the listing submission which affects how the app will rank. Apps that rank well appear at the top or close to the top when we search for a specific term. Initially - we want to be found for our app name which is ‘Rave about Billie Eilish’.

How we rank in the stores is based on how well we write the following attributes: app name, url, sub title, keyword field, ratings and reviews, updates and downloads and engagement.

App Store Optimisation is the process of researching keywords which are the search terms that might be used to find apps in the store. For example: A fan looking for a ‘Billie Eilish’ app may well type in ‘ Billie Eilish’ in the search. The store will return a list of apps that it believes are most relevant to that search term. To stand a chance of being found for the term ‘Billie Eilish’ you will have to use her name in each of the attributes available such as app name, title, sub-title, description etc.

There is a key point that I need to raise which comes back to our choice of application development platform. Flutter gives us cross-platform development from a single codebase. We developed the Billie Eilish app using Flutter because it makes it available on the following platforms:

  • iOS & Android
  • iPad
  • Desktop PWA

The PWA element or Progressive Web App means that our application can be accessed from any device and used in a similar way to that of a native iOS or Android app. This opens up our market. We don’t only depend on fans going to the app store to find our app. They can find it through a regular web search and the PWA is configured to invite them to download the app if they wish. This is an important factor for our marketing strategy. After all - it’s the contents of the application that we’re peddling.

For the moment - this is a waiting game. While we’re waiting why not mug up on some party facts:
